How to get there

There are three principle ways to get to Lefktro

Fly to Kalamata

Kalamata is currently served by Viking who fly from Gatwick and Manchester during the summer season (May to October). They tend to fly out and back on Saturdays, and you have the choice of 1, 2, 3 or even more weeks.

Kalamata airport is just over 1 hours drive from Lefktro. There are plenty of car hire firms that have an office at the airport and a Google search for "Kalamata airport car hire"  produced over 200,000 hits! The route is quite easy - you follow the signs for Kalamata and from there take the road towards "Areopolis". Alternatively you might do better to get a taxi to the house, and hire a car for a few days once you've settled in..

Fly to Athens

Athens International Airport is a very modern and busy airport with flights from all over the world.

Visit Expedia or Travelocity or one of the many other travel agency sites to get prices and timetables.  Easyjet also fly to Athens but are not always the cheapest.

From Athens, you can hire a car at the airport or City Centre if you decide to stopover - we recommend the hotels close to the Agora if you want to visit the sites and sample the local night life - the Attalos hotel is very reasonable.  There are thousands of car hire sites, but we have yet to see Pangosmio beaten on price.  The journey takes 4 to 5 hours.  The first hour is motorway driving and fast but not pretty, but once you have crossed the canal at Corinth the scenery improves, and there are places to visit. We like to stop at Ancient Corinth  or Ancient Nemea (and buy some Nemean wine from a road side kiosk). If you can, it is worth stopping over at Nafplio for one or two nights (we recommend the King Othon hotel). Nafplio is lovely itself and is the ideal base from which to visit Epidavros and Mycenae

You can get to Kalamata by bus  - get taxi or or express bus X93 from the airport to Kifisos Coach Station (Address: 100 Kifissou St, 10442 Athens +30 210 5134588).  The trip takes 4 hours including a comfort stop.  There are then plenty of taxis or regular local buses to Stoupa.  The main bus stop at Stoupa is on the main road 100 metres from the house.

Ferry to Patras

There are regular sailings from the ports of Ancona, Bari, Brindisi, Venice and Trieste in Italy. The crossing from Ancona to Patras takes about 19 hours. Patras to Kalamata is three hours by car.

Places to visit.

Just off the road to Areopolis, the beautiful bay of Itilo is fringed with fish restaurants, and we're told that turtles come in to the sea side tavernas to feed.

From Areopolis you can drive on to Gytheo

and then drive north to Mystras and visit an amazing Byzantine city built down the side of the hills above Sparta.

From Mystras there is a road back across to Kalamata
